My two cents on the Rep. Weiner debacle (as well as a #teamweiner tribute)

Bill Clinton & JFK, the original Democratic pimps, approve of this post.

Unless you're living under a rock, you have heard about the Rep. Weiner debacle.  Weinergate, as it's happily being called, started by the politician meeting some girls online, and sending them some slightly NSFW pictures.

I'm not going to post or link the bulge here, but if you're really that interested, a quick google search will get you what you want.

The biggest issue in all of this?  He's married, and it wasn't his wife we was sending lewd pictures to.  Other than that, no harm no foul, right?

Wrong.  Kind of.

Politics is politics.  Republican or Democrat, it really didn't matter who did it.  The other side will see this scandal, and flock to it like sharks smelling blood in the water.  Did he break the law?  No.  Do his constituents care?  Not really.

Who does care?  Tabloids, spin artists, and anyone looking to profit from another person's embarrassment.

#3 is where this gets interesting.  This all happened on twitter, so the 160-character-or-less giant is getting amazing publicity from the event.  Weiner-related jokes are through the roof.  As shown on another blog, businesses are trying to capitalize on the play on words.

And, of course, there are he late night talk show hosts:

Being a red-blooded male, I have sent racy pictures of myself to a female or two in my time.  Sexting is becoming more and more popular, and "friends with textual benefits" can be fun.  So, in my own twisted way, I applaud Rep Weiner for being a man.

*click* the corndog for my #teamweiner tribute...

So, Rep Weiner, I say this to you.  Apologize to your wife for e-cheating.  Apologize to the internet for plastering your package on a worldwide forum.  But don't ever apologize for being a man.
Please Share it! :)

When one's wife is knocked up (or even if she weren't) it is deemed socially inappropriate to send hundreds of pervy texts to another woman (all on the same day) asking said other woman if her hoo-ha is tight for him and does she want to see his cock. Doing so is not only wrong but also completely stupid. Sending photos of one's man junk over a public forum like twitter is just plain assine.

I could care less what someone does with their private life as long as they do their job well and aren't committing criminal acts. However, when someone repeatedly makes incredibly poor choices you really do have to wonder about their ability to be a political representative of the people.

I completely agree, great post. :D

Yeah, I could really care less. From what I've heard, this guy is actually doing a good job in his office. Whatever you do at home, on your own time is up to you. Heck, how many times does it need to be brought up that Ben Franklin was known for his charm with women just as much as for his politics. Today's media and politicians would have torn Franklin apart.

That video was terrible. Mid-point I glanced down and was startled to see my left hand putting a gun to my chin.

Anyone who’s offended by the notion of exchanging randy pictures on the Internet is either so old fashioned that their birth certificate is written in ancient hieroglyphics, or just a big fat hypocrite. The only person who’s been wronged here is his wife. He should apologize to her in private and leave it at that. Instead we’ll have to watch him lump other people into that apology (people who have no business being there) and act like they’re all as equally entitled as his very own wife.

i have been sent one or two "weiner" pics in the last couple of years and not all of them contained in underwear. You guys just love showing off your package dont you?

HaHa, That's great.
Thank you for not treating this like it doesn't happen all the time :P

Haha the irony of having power is, that once you have power, you cannot exercise all of it. The freest man is the man without. I feel bad for politicians who don't get away with lewd behaviors. You would think after climbing the ladder of law, you'd be able to act on your own accord (and money). Unfortunately not. When I heard about this either in the TV or on the radio, I remember thinking, "You expect a politician named WEINER to be NOT sleezy?"

Unknown said...

Oh I and also agree with empress. Though I could care less about politicians and celebrities alike, the fact that they make poor choices reflect some degree of incompetence. The fact that his constituents don't care that much is also indicative of the depravity of society in general. I mean, don't get me wrong. I don't think people should carry pitch forks and send a mob after him for e-cheating, but it's absolutely immoral and inappropriate. The Ancient Romans saw the importance of a powerful man looking moral. It's so important to them that a priesthood was one of the first steps to power.

I have already said my two cents about the whole situation as per my "Soft-Core Friday" and "Men Behaving Badly" posts but for the sake of those that might not follow me, here's the long and short of it. It's not that you did it, it's that you denied it and made it a week+ long media circus of false hacking accusations when you knew the whole time the truth would come out. Own it. Do the rest of us the courtesy of not having to hear about it non-stop for weeks on end. That is all.

Oh how the puns about Wiener's wiener abound

Ally said...

Dude, I love your blog. By now, you've probably gathered this. However, I have to disagree with you on this a political tidbit. Maybe if I were a man, I'd see your point... However, I was truly disappointed to hear he wasn't hacked and that he honestly would put himself, his high-profile wife, family and entire Democratic party in this position. He is a public figure and I don't care an actor gets caught, when it's someone in politics it's a disgrace to our country and those who voted for them. Weiner was a very strong supporter of gay and liberal rights and I loved that about him. I think politicians must be held to a higher standard. Yes, a man is a man, and most men are disgusting. I am so glad I don't have kids, I'd hate to have to explain why our country's politicians and decision-makers ,supposedly fighting for our rights and beliefs, are such crude idiots. Just my two cents.

@Ally - I agree and disagree. He's still the same man the NY voters elected, we just know more about the man now. He can still do good, but like Clinton, he will always have a blemish on his record.

I never like it when people lie (especially to the public) or abuse their power. But it seems to be common all over the world. Were politicians doing this 100 years ago? You bet. Back then, there was no internet/twitter/tabloids, and you could pay people to keep quiet. I don't think I like him as a person, but as a politician, if he can keep doing what his voters expect of him, I don't see a reason for him to resign.

Same with Clinton. Bad husband, hound dog of a man, but a pretty good President. Sometimes you just have to take the bad with the good.

Another case of some stupid double standard where damn near half the country has done something similar ("cheating" on your spouse), but when someone else does it in the limelight, they are crucified for it. Pathetic.

My boss (65 year old male) got into this same argument this morning. I told him I thought there were bigger issues in the USA that needed to be taken care of and it's not like he's the first one to ever do it. Boss man flips the fuck out and tells me that I'm whats making society so corrupt. WOW!!!!!!!!!

Had to laugh though, because later he did admit that maybe this is just a normal thing in society now-a-days and it's not like the "good old days" anymore.

AWESOME POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and I too send NSFW pix all the time..... ;-)

Seriously, as a single woman online, you can't imagine how many cock shots I've gotten from men (75% of them married). I am surprised, however, that we have a tighter standard for our reps than for our Prez. Look at Clinton (a little more than a crotch shot in his case) and he stayed in office. Apparently the prez doesn't need as tight a standards as the country's reps. Hmm...

A Beer for the Shower said...

I just really didn't think women liked cock shots that much. The penis... it's not a very flattering looking thing.

As for me, I don't sext. As a guy who has the potential to become something big with his writing... well, the last thing I want is this exact scenario; my dick being shown everywhere, undermining my writing skills.

So I don't sext. I remain a responsible person and I especially stay loyal to my wife. And, at least to me, that makes me the bigger man.

clearly hes gay, dont vote for him

D4 said...

Sure, his manly instincts got him bit in the ass. But I agree. However, since I honestly do not care about the mans junk, I haven't been kept up to date with it. Did he apologize for his behavior? I wouldn't approve of this either. His wife, his carelessness, but not his behavior. Who would he apologize to? I hope he's not a role model to society and so needs to publicly confess his apology or anything. Seriously.

I figured the play on words had been beat to death in the media. It is irresistible from a satire standpoint. I agree with your statement about private lives, but I also believe that a responsible, professional politician who represents the people should display better judgment. Once is a mistake, twice is surprising, and then after that.....plain stupid.
Always great to visit here Brandon.

A great post and some really great comments here. I think my disappointment personally was that he wasn't upfront about it when he had the chance. This was my same disappointment with Clinton. Politicians are humans, and we're all going to make mistakes and make poor choices. The fact that he did such a piss poor job trying to beat around the bush rather than just admitting his mistake and taking the steps to correct it. Once a politician is caught in such a blatant lie, all credibility goes *poof*

In my single days, dudes used to send me cock shots all the damn time. All I wanted to show them was a picture of my kitty. I think they would always get a bad impression of me. As I would send them pictures of my cat "Blue", they would send me pictures of their ding dongs. AND THEY WOULD ALWAYS BE SMALL AS HELL TOO! O.o

I clicked the corndog and wished I hadn't. I was trying to suck on this banana flavored Popsicle and damn it... You ruined it for me. Anyway, I couldn't give a rat's ass what Wiener did on Twitter. That's between him and his wife.

Sure, it takes a few points away from his role as a... Ah, never mind... He's a dumbass. Good post, dude.

I don't know if him doing all of this is necessarily just "being a man," but I do agree he doesn't owe an apology for anything. I don't think he owes anyone an apology for lying about something that wasn't work-related. Our country has turned into a big reality show. News reporters of the 50's-70's who are now dead are rolling over in their grave at the site of every "news" station turning into TMZ. I'm sick of "gotcha news." All it does is take attention away from what's really going on.

A new poll of constituents in Weiner's district in NY shows 55% want him to stick it out. Figuratively... I mean. They don't want him to resign.
There are people in Congress still serving who were caught have actual sex (as opposed to fantasy sex), so who paid hookers, others who paid hush money to coverup their affairs. At least Weiner was sending his junk to women, that's a plus... (and proves he's a Democrat).

Why resign? This is between he and his wife, and unless something else surfaces (like knowledge on his part that underaged girls were receiving his sexts) what's he done other than shame himself and other progressives?

Bah... nothing to see here, move along, people...
