I love me some "Fried Up Chicken"

...whoa.

...just... whoa.

A brand new restaurant opened up in in town, and this place is amazing.

Kentucky ain't got NOTHIN on this dude.

It's a little ghetto, but the food is amazing.  Besides, I'm kinda ghetto myself.

This place is called "Fried Up Chicken & Scones."  It's on a busy street, and can easily be missed.  When you park, the only signage is window-marker lettering on the windows.  It's new, and quickly thrown together.

You walk in, and one dude was working there.  He was a tall, skinny black dude with kind of a southern drawl.  He was the cashier, the server, the host, and the cook.  The menu is kind of sad-looking.  It's a science-project posterboard, with cheap lettering glued onto it, and prices written with a Sharpie.

My girlfriend and I kind of looked at each other, wondering how the food was gonna be.  We ordered, and he told us to sit tight while he cooks up the chicken.

Soul music playing on a $15 Walmart portable stereo.  Made me chuckle a little.

The food takes a while to cook, but that's because he preps, breads and fries everything to order.

And this stuff was WORTH THE WAIT.  This guy can seriously fry up a chicken.

Plenty of sides to choose from too, but since this place is called "Fried Up Chicken & Scones," we wanted to try his fried up chicken, and his scones.

Ho. Lee. Crap.  Those scones.  They were like an orgasm for your mouth.  I'm glad we ordered extra.  They're huge, but you can't have just one.  You could easily devour 6, and forget all about the chicken.

So yes.  It's kind of sad looking on the outside, and kind of sad looking on the inside.  But the food.  OMG THE FOOD... it more than makes up for everything.  This is some serious southern food.

Next time I go, I'm getting the catfish & okra.  Damn.... just damn....

I'm tempted to talk to this guy and go "Look.  Dude.  Hook me up with some free lunches, and let me design you a to-go menu.  Maybe even a proper sign."  You know, help him get his business rollin.  We'll see.  Until then, I'm just gonna tell ALL my friends, coworkers etc up here to go and check it out.
Please Share it! :)

LMAO...Fried Up Chicken and Scones?!? Well, its always the sketchy looking/sounding places that have the best food. Kinda explains why people (in the south, because i've never seen such in my 20 yrs as a new yorker) buy meals from folks who set up vans on the side of the road lol.

Brandon: you'd be crazy not to offer to help the guy with graphics and anything else that you're good at! It might be the difference in him keeping the door open and having to move on to that factory job he's dreading!
Support the things you love, make sure others know about it (if you have to drag them in and pay for their meal!) and keep telling the guy how great it is! Affirmation can make all the difference!

Down here we have dozens of places that offer southern cooking, but you'd be surprised how few of them know what they're doing... and middle Tn ought to be crawling with southern cuisine experts, right?

When you find it gettin' done right, support it heart and soul!

Nice find. The cook obviously puts a lot of love into the food.

Totally offer to do some design stuff. You just know any one who cooks that well is going to be a cool dude.

Also, sorry to hear about the recent 'meh' stuff. Hopefully you won't be deterred in general.

...and LOL @ your Halibuts comment the other day.
'But, but, HALIBUT? Round Nine' is the most visited page on ABWars, almost twice over 2nd place. ??!

That's the sign of a great friend chicken joint--more attention to the important thing--the chicken! Excellent find in the North. Hee hee

SCONES?! In a Fried Chicken joint? Is it just me, or is that weird? At any rate - it's the hole in the wall places that get my vote EVERY TIME! I've just discovered a new little Thai restaurant - and I have been dragging all of my friends in with me. The little gal who owns it (and the one waiter dude she has, who I think is her brother), always squeal with delight when I come in, "Ooh! You're back! You bring more friends?! Thank you!" And I've also taken a shit load of her to go menus and handed them out to folks. In return, I get a free dessert every now and then. Quid pro quo, baby...

WERK YOUR MAGIC, Idahomie...and enjoy your fried chicken!!

I JUST had a scrambled egg and some turkey bacon and my mouth is watering! That sounds amazing. I think you should offer to help him out-it could be your good deed and your full belly for a bit! :-)

This is the second blog post in a row I have read about fried chicken. Is it Fried Chicken Day?

BlackLOG said...

Sad to say it probably won't be there next time you go....People live life at such a fast pace these days that they won’t wait for anything, even when it tastes 100 times better…they would rather save a few minutes and go to the fast food tasteless joint next door and chomp down on the pre-prepared fried rat that has been congealing in the bacteria infested heated cabinets….

hope I'm wrong and you the catfish & okra.

I am in love with the place even before you mentioned the chicken and scones! 99% of the time, it's beat-up places like this that will make the taste buds and the tummy the happiest!

And yes, definitely pimp him out to your friends. He obviously loves making others happy with his food, so to hear how happy he has made you will just make his day 10-fold!

Sounds like a good find, everyone could use some fried chicken from time to time. I say give the man a hand, he obviously can use the design work. He already has the food down, it seems like potential to build a local empire.

I love me some ghetto hole in the wall chicken joints! As long as it's greasy, thick, and they fill me up I'm one happy bitch! Hmmmm, greasy, thick, and fills me up, huh? No comment!!!

An orgasm in your mouth? Now that's some tasty fried chicken! Now that you've got me hungry, I gotta go out and get me some. The greasier the better. I think you should talk to that guy and work out a favor for a favor like you were talking about. That would be a good deal for both of yas.

I feel your pain. I did the same thing... moved to somewhere in the middle of nowhere for love. Now I am stuck in a little town with 80s outfit, stores closed on Sundays AND Mondays, and rednecks. Fun stuff.

Thank, Q said...

The hole-in-the-wall spots usually have the best food. Go figure.

Haven't found any decent food since I moved to Idaho Falls. Can you please share with me the location of this little gem? I've searched for it with no luck and would LOVE to try it......

Lost.in.Idaho said...

@Stephanie: It's on Yellowstone, and either E or D street. It's a tan stucco building with window-paint on the walls.

Ghetto on the outside, ghetto on the inside, but some really good food.

And thanks for being a follower. I appreciate all the lovin I get on this blog, but a local? Wow, that really means something!!
