Dude Tip: Flying Beer Home

I had a trade show in Vegas earlier this week, and am now spending my weekend in California visiting my kids.

We had Sushi together Friday night (my kids love sushi, how awesome is that??) and then watched Paranorman at the local Drive In theater.

(...imagine if we had Sushi then saw Finding Nemo in 3D... I found him!  He's in my belly!)

Whenever I am in California, I enjoy my favorite beer from my favorite company:  Red Trolley Ale by Karl Strauss Brewery.

I've blogged about my love for them before.  They still don't ship to Idaho, so this is a rare treat for me.

But now, I have found a way to enjoy my California beer in Idaho.

I can fly the beer home with me.

Researching how to do it, I found you can't UPS or FedEx beer home.  But it occurred to me you can check 2 bags for free with Southwest.

I'm flying Southwest.  And have only one checked bag.

After some digging, I found this policy explaining you CAN fly beer home, and how to properly do it.

You have to pad it, seal it, cushion it, box it and seal it, but it can be done.

It can be done, my brothers.  It can be done.

I am happy to say I will be bringing a pair of 12-packs home with me, after I raid a Staples and get some bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and a plethora of other things...

My beer is leaving on a jet plane....  Can you hear me singing?

Can you tell I'm stoked?

It can be done, my brothers...
Please Share it! :)

That beer might go airborne even after the plane ride.

Just earlier this week I had to go to my dad's for a few days. He lives in a Dry county and the neighboring county is wet. between that wet county and my house is totally DRY! No drinky drinky for anybody. So I stopped on my way home to get something so that when I got home I didn't have to stop.

Guess what I found!!! PUMKPIN BEER!!! It is back! I love this season and will likely pigeon hole cases to last into the holidays and beyond!

I applaud your resolve to procure your beloved beer. I live in Portland, Oregon. where micro breweries are everywhere, but I just don't like the taste of beer. I prefer the hard stuff. Since I'm fat anyway i guess it's good that I don't soak up beer calories. But please enjoy a bottle for me. Not liking beer just seems so un-American.

I'm learning to love beer. Especially craft beer. As long as it's not your typical watered down Bud or some such awfulness I'll give it a try.

This beer would be perfect for you. It's a tasty beer from a small brewery, and will make your happy-spots tingle.

As long as bourbon is somewhere in there you should be ok...

Ugh, I brought beer back for a friend when I came back from language school in Guatemala and it was a disaster. I hadn't wrapped it in any way and, due to the pressure, I guess, one of the bottles exploded all inside my luggage. My friend still got his beer, but my shoes that had been packed smelled like beer for months!

I did actually know this, and I've brought home beer with me many a time. In fact, last time I went on a trip, we brought an extra suitcase... just for alcohol...

Would you expect any less from someone with this blog name?

Not a fan of beer, but kudos to you for finding a legal way to procure your favorite beverage. I had to do the same thing with Big Red soda back in the 80's. Back then you could only get in Texas.

Cheers!

I've never loved a beer enough to need to travel with it. I have a few other loves that are local though. My UTZ chips and my Old Bay seasoning are local favorites. My understanding is Old Bay may have caught on elsewhere, so you all could enjoy that goodness.
Glad you got to spend time with your kids!

I don't like beer, but if I ever come across a tasty, refreshing beverage that I love, I will definitely fly it home.

You should have hired Burt Reynolds and that tall guy with the dog to drive it back for you.

I have a friend in California who home brews, he made a peanut butter cup beer...holy crap on a cracker! It is awesome!

One of the best things about living out here in New England, we LOVE beer and there are many, many brewerys within driving distance!

I've traveled with wine. It's heavy but it's worth it!

That's a pretty useful thing to remember should I ever travel anywhere. My mother tried to fly some alcohol over from India, but apparently it isn't allowed there. Hopefully the beer has a safe flight.
