Guest Posts Are GOLD When Looking For New Traffic

I love writing guest posts.  It gives me a chance to write creative material and share my humor, but on a different blog.  It is also a useful tool to get my name out there more, and to show my writing to a new audience.

It also benefits the blog in question, because I often write about it (like I'm doing now).

I currently have a guest post up on Bloggerati.  It is a two-parter, with both an interview and an actual guest post.

When I write a guest post, I try to stick to the theme or niche of the blogger, but add my own spin to things.  G's blog was long ago called Bar Science, so I first thought about writing about bar tricks or etiquette.  He recently changed to 'Bloggerati' and has more of a general feel to it.  Since he recently blogged about Rugby, I decided to make my post about a comparison of Rugby vs American Football.

Are you looking for more blog followers?  Increased traffic?  More links to your website (which help boost page rank and search indexing)?  If so, I'd recommend writing a guest post on a neighboring blog.

When it comes to blogging, networking helps the world go 'round.  The more people have access to your work and are aware of your blog, the more popular you're going to get.

And you know me, I'm an attention whore.

As I write this, I'm close to 800 followers and have about 1,500-2,000 daily pageviews.  G @ Bloggerati has a hair over 400 followers.  There may be some overlapping, but by guest-posting I'm exposing my name and writing to a new audience.

In short, it's a win/win.  Exposure, increased traffic, cross-linking, and I just saved him 2 day's worth of posts with the interview and guest post.  If someone wanted to guest post on my blog (cough cough) it would save me writing time and get someone fresh mentioning my blog to a new audience.

With luck, he's sending increased traffic and new followers my way, and I'm doing the same for him.  (which means you, so go check out his blog)

Will I ever be an internet megastar?  Probably not.  But guest blogging is a nice little booster.  A guy can dream, can't he?

Oh yes, it will be mine...

  1. I have often had guest posts on my blog, yourself included.
It is a lot of fun for all involved usually.

Done a few guests myself and you are right, it can be a good way to self promote

  2. I think we all are attention whores at times...

Now, my blog is depressing! So, it was a good piece of advice! Maybe some day I'll reach the 20 followers... A girl can dream too, can't she?

  3. I love doing guest posts but never do it with the expectation of gaining X number of followers. I just love new people reading what I have to say, giving the other blogger a break, or chiming in on a topic they are talking about. I also love the full blog swap (blog for blog). Who doesn't love a break once & a while. I adore having guest bloggers (at both sites). :) You are absolutely right though...great way to gain exposure.

  4. I'm thinking about hosting some guest posts myself. I will make the official announcement to my readers sometime in the next few days. You are welcome to participate if you like. My blog has become more of a comic strip here lately but I often write about other stuff too.

  5. Brandini. You should come over to do a guest appearance at my place. I violate every rule for successful blogging that you wrote about last week.

My readers need to see what careful, thoughtful and well-crafted bloggies look like. They'll never get it from me.

    Come on down!

  6. I agree! It's fun to take up residency on someone else's page and it's great to have fresh material and insight at your house as well. I should have/do more guest posts....hmmmm It's been a while.

  8. Right now, I'd prefer to just HAVE a guest blogger. I'm just trying to hit 20 followers at this point.

  9. I love a good guest post as well from time to time, as long as it doesn't turn into nothing but guest posts. Too much shameful promotion is a bad thing. But a little bit of shameful promotion is Internet gold. And more than gaining new followers, I just like collaborating with new people on a post. It's cool to see how they work on their posts, which is often drastically different from how I work on mine (drunk, in my underwear, belligerent, etc).

  10. Love me some guest posting. For whatever reason it gets the creative juices flowing. If you were throwing the bait out there that you'd like a guest poster, I would volunteer, just toss me an email. Also, there's a possibility I might be moving to Moscow, ID.

  18. I actually had an offer to guest blog over at another site and was going to do it...but then something happened in my life and I couldn't get back to the person offering about it. After that, I was too embarrassed to contact them again.

To be honest, guest posting terrifies me. Am I good enough to post on someone else's blog? What if they hate it? What if it doesn't go well? And who would want me to guest post? I'm not an expert at anything, nor am I very well-known in any way.

It sounds more terrifying than I can imagine handling. I think I might search a guide to writing a guest post for another blog and see if anyone has step-by-step instructions for the petrified people out there like me (cause I can't be the only one...right?).

Thanks for the great post, and I'll definitely look into this more! Have a great day, and happy writing!
