November 9, 2011.
Doomsday.
But not really.
We're just testing to see if we're ready for doomsday.
At 2pm Eastern Time, the United States will be conducting a nation-wide test of their emergency alert system. It's only a test.
...but it may not look like a test... but don't worry, it is...
Wait, what?
I have been seeing commercials for the last 2-3 weeks, trying to assure the public "Don't worry, it's only a test... we promise..." over and over again.
I'm sorry, we have been seeing these tests for as long as I can remember. Any 80's kid remembers the 45 seconds of BYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO on the TV, so annoying you'd want to cover your ears or change the channel to the People's Court.
So why is this any different?
I guess we'll find out at 2pm Eastern.
...if we survive...
Just remember! You have nothing to fear! (except Herman Cain's gropey hands...)
The closest thing to emergency test is for our singular nuclear reactor. The last drill we did was way back in 1995 with a select few people.
ReplyDeleteIs this another Harold Camping scam? I've only ever seen the emergency broadcast system conduct tests, and I've been in a hurricane. I'm off to buy gallons of water and a generator (because I still panic like that).
ReplyDeletejust a test... riiiiiiight...
ReplyDeleterun, do not walk, to the nearest exit... nothing like making me more paranoid than I already am.
ReplyDeleteWe posted this at about the same time... I'm reminded of the Orson Welles broadcast of the War of the Worlds that caused people to jump off of buildings or bridges.
ReplyDeleteThinning the herd is a good thing. Sometimes Darwinism could use our help...
Oh man I remember those mind numbing warnings from the 80's. This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test. SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEECH. Ick.
ReplyDeleteSo, my extremely remote location, while having indoor plumbing, electricity, internet, AND satellite TV does not apparently get such stupid commercials warning us about the "test". Either we are perfectly hidden for any emergency, or we are the forgotten ones. Either way, those stupid tests are hella annoying and if the world implodes, a hidden bunker and the EBS won't save you. ;)
ReplyDeleteThose 80s and early 90s test beeps were and still are THE worst. They'd always coe on right when you needed to hear the dialogue or see a scene. You know what system? Warn me less. I like spontaneity.
ReplyDeleteand just like the dinosaurs, a comet will crash into the planet and destroy us all...
ReplyDeleteJeez, I thought we had until next December. I better hurry and have lunch.
ReplyDeleteSo.. anything happen? It would've been interesting if a national emergency would've happened exactly at 2:00 PM eastern. I mean, funny for people who like catastrophes and stuff. I'm totally not one of those people or anything.
