A #Brony Post: Meet Derpy the 'Special' Pony

I did an earlier post about the newest version of My Little Pony and the cult following it's getting from adults (especially males).  The show, in response, is giving team Brony what they want.

Internet memes, in pony form.

Meet Derpy Hooves.  A pony with 'derp' eyes and a flair for trouble.

(For the internet layman, here is one of Urban Dictionary's definitions of derp:  The word that describes a particularly retarded face: A retarded smile, and the eyes pointing in different directions.)

Internet uses of derp are exampled here, with Derpy the Derp Dog:

And many more derps to herp HERE.

Of course, a pony like this was a big target for controversy, and probably rightfully so.  Even though there is an adult following, this show is still mainly for children.

Watch this clip from the show, and judge for yourself...

Now, once again, with side-commentary by the Bronies:

Is this funny?  Offensive?  A smidge of both?  Do you even care?  When she derps, do you herp?  Sound off below!

  2. How could this be offensive? I mean look at all the other cartoons out there.. this stuff is cake. Now I saw nothing special with the first clip.. but that second one? Oh my. I remember when my thoughts would go that hectic over a cartoon.. it's so funny to watch.

  4. I should add a little disclaimer. I myself am not a Brony, but I have a lot of Facebook/Twitter friends who are.

The buzz about Derpy made me intrigued, and I just had to write about it.

  5. I had to go to your previous post on the subject to try and understand what this all meant. And when my mind still couldn't grasp the idea I had to go to google for more help.

I kept thinking there was a subtle or cultural joke going on that I wasn't able to grasp.

However, everything appears to be actually straight forward - and it was just my mind that was trying to complicate matters.

Grown men are watching, and becoming fans of, My Little Pony cartoons...

Ummmmm ok lol... the second video with the chat going on beside it was funny because I thought they were making fun of it - but I guess they were just enjoying it?

    Damn! I'm still confused lol...

  6. Wow that chat room looks fun.

I'll be quite honest, though. I will probably end up buying something MLP related for my niece.

  9. I've always found MLP to be excruciatingly boring and congratulated myself on having boys who, I thought, would express no interest in this insipid cartoon. Now I can totally see my older son being a brony. At least he has his own place in which to practice his stupidity.

  10. I say derp all the time at work and it has started to catch on. so now everyone is saying it when something stupid happens. lol.

  11. I see nothing wrong with a mentally retarded pony. There's already so much worse out there. I'll have to say, it's kind of fun watching those comments fly by like mad in that second vid.

  12. So the character is actually a spaz, and really named "Derpy." I thought that was just a joke. Wow. Yeah, the Brony fans must be the same guys who write this shit.

Ponies back in my day had regular names like Lemondrop and Funshine. No wonder kids these days are so messed up!

  13. I used to love My Little Pony when I was little, but this is a kind of bastardized version. That said, the fact that they have a pony named Derpy is awesome!

  14. I will admit, I was happy to see Derpy as a character, but I didn't expect her to be an actual idiot with a deep voice. I liked the idea of her being smart and doing it on purpose rather than being the unwanted retarded pony that everyone wants to chase a way.
