Why #FollowFriday (#FF) gets on my nerves.

If you play on twitter, you have probably seen #FollowFriday (or #FF).  Basically it's a shoutout people use to promote blogs they're following, that you should too.

Do I do it?  From time to time.  But it mainly annoys me.

Firstly, because I'm pimped far less than I'd like.  Am I not follow-worthy?  Don't you looooove me?
(I kid, I kid...)

Mainly because of the ridiculous spam.  I'm not going to blindly follow people if you tell me to.  Tell me why, so I can actually click on them.

If you spam too much, you've lost me.  For example...

This dude bombarded my timeline with 18 #FF tweets in the course of 12 minutes.  My eyes bled.

Yet I didn't unfollow him, even though I was tempted.  He's a good blogger, and I enjoy his work.  Just... dude... seriously?  Did you pimp EVERYONE you follow??  If anything, it makes me want to UNfollow anyone on that list!

What do you think of the Follow Friday phenomenon?

  1. being a newbie to Twitter I had no idea what #ff meant. When I got a mention I just kinda went "thanks" because that is what people seem to do.
Dont think it made anybody follow me who dont actually know me anyway.
I'm not fussed anyway. I prefer the tweets of what people are doing.

  2. Don't follow him, but I do know how you feel, and I think unfollow!

  3. I don't participate, per se, but if someone mentions me, I reply and thank them, and leave the other names in the tweet as well.

  4. I've pretty much all but given up on it.. I get too paranoid of leaving people out.

  5. Well this is one of the reasons I hate Twitter and wonder, what the eff the point of it really is?

And I generally don't like the "follow me" type of people because I think if you genuinely entertaining (for whatever reason) then people will just find you. I don't know. I'd like to grow my blog but then on the other hand I hate just putting myself out there like an asshole. SO.. I might play along sometimes, but it's mostly so I can find new blogs not necessarily to pimp myself out.

But I would definitely leave that guy a comment asking if he's become a pimp and is he being reimbursed. Dang.

  6. To @dadofdivas: Nothing against you. You're not the only one that does it, you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I still like your blog... just the twitterspam.... arrrgh!

  7. I am appalled, but not silently appalled. I am going to follow and then unfollow each of these blogs to let them know just how loudly appalled I really am.

    APPALLED!

  8. I'm 100% with you on this. Yes, I have done it on occasion, but when I do I pick out 3 - 4 tweeps who have done something to inspire me lately. Not my whole damn list.

Research shows that in the entire history of Twitter, and the millions of people using #ff every Friday, only 3 people have ever followed someone based on that recommendation. Look it up.

  9. I hate hate hate the commercialism of Twitter. I have 17 people I follow and I DO NOT want re-tweets, etc. If I wanted to follow your friends or hear what they had to say, I'd stalk your followed people and ask!

  12. I do it, but only with reputable people. I've actually gained followers from it, but that's not saying much. I prefer blog followers as opposed to tweet followers any way. But, exposure is exposure I guess.

  13. i love #FF because it allows me to tell those i adore how much i like them and how much i think others should stalk them to. for me it's fun and kind of like a game. i do it through the week as well. guess maybe i shouldn't stalk you on twitter though if it annoys you..lol

  14. You know, I do Tweet, but I still have no freaking idea what it is or why it is. I just go on and write a message and sometimes put up a link and leave. Other than that, I pretty much admit, I don't really read the tweets others write unless I'm bored and that's almost never.

  16. I HATE Follow Fridays. I hate that it fills up my timeline all day long. I even hate when I get constantly FF'ed all day long. It's pointless!! Does anybody actually get any followers from all that garbage? I never do; I don't get any more new followers on Fridays than I do any other day of the week (well, maybe I do, but because of #wineparty, but that's different.)

Have you seen the Oatmeal's take on it? Brilliant. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/follow_friday

  18. I hate it - I say thank you - that's it. I rarely will do one, but if I do, it's because I have a particular point/joke to make.
