Like over 24 million of you, I have Netflix and have enjoyed it for over 2 years. I love the DVD's but primarily use the streaming feature. Being able to watch movies, television shows, and obscure B-movie boob-fests make me smile.
I watch Doctor Who. I watch Bebe's Kids. SNL. Comedy routines. All the old 007 movies. All thanks to Netflix.
Now, I'm shopping around. Netflix has pissed me off.
Like the other 24+ million, I recently received an email regarding a change to their pricing structure. This is either the 2nd or 3rd change to their program since the beginning of the year, and this is the straw that broke this camel's back:
$1 a month price hike? That I can understand. $2? Pushing it, but ok. Service is good, and the variety makes up for the higher price.
$5 a month? An extra $60 a year? I'm sorry, for that extra price I better get something else for my money. Something 'above and beyond' like a hand job or a free puppy. (or puppies that give happy endings? too far?)
In my opinion, this is pure greed. The change is going into effect on September 1st, so at this point I'm looking at August 31 as my last day with my current Netflix plan. Will I go to streaming only? Reduce down to only 1 DVD at a time? Or will I just give them the goodbye finger, and move to blockbuster? Hulu?
Time will tell. All I know right now is the blowback from consumers is getting fierce. Twitter was buzzing all night Tuesday night, and bloggers (including yours truly) are foaming at the mouth.
Bad move, Netflix. Bad move. I hope you see a mass exodus, and I hope your competition comes out with a smokin "FUCK YOU" deal. I'll be laughing as I take my business elsewhere. For me, I'll be marking 8/31 on my calendar as "Byebye Netflix Day."
I'd imagine companies would effect price change to be applicable to a customer once his subscription expires instead of springign it on them mid-way through their subscription.
ReplyDeleteYou're the second persons in a couple of hours that I've seen posting about this. I can see how this is going to backfire for Netflix.
ReplyDeleteI would certainly be shopping around. They must have competition. that is just robbery to jack it up that high in one hit.
ReplyDeleteYikes. Guess it is a good thing that I never had Netflicks before. I hate when they take a service they know you have come to depend on and think they have cornered and hike prices just because they can. Fact is that ondemand has removed the need for them in a lot of ways and they probably want to make up some of that money.
ReplyDeleteSorry that you are foaming at the mouth. I hope you find a solution that works for you.
entertaining post as usual. (:
ReplyDeleteSince I live in China, I'm free of guilt - I buy pirated DVDs all the time.
All I can say is, MOVE HERE.
Totally agree. We paid for a full year of Netflix (1 DVD at a time and streaming) and now they're telling us what we paid for IN ADVANCE will be rendered invalid in September. Of course we can't call to figure out how that makes sense, but the phone lines are jammed. I pity anyone working in their customer service division. If you find an alternative, I would love to hear it.
ReplyDeleteThat's how it always works - low when they're small, and then when they get big, they need more feeding.
ReplyDeleteBastards.
I don't know if you can go to blockbuster for much longer - better hurry up.
I know that what Netflix offers in the States as far as programming is much different in Canada (not as many new releases etc). However our only option here as far as I know (I'm no longer a member)our price option was only 7.99/month and no DVD's in the mail, just streaming. I left when I moved and just haven't bothered setting it up at the new place yet. But what you're complaining about here is certainly valid, that is quite the increase, considering they already had an increase this year.

Heard about this...greedy bastards.
ReplyDeleteYou'd be surprised how much customers are willing to take up the ass before they say no more.
ReplyDelete::laughs:: Puppies and handjobs should not be in the same sentence, hahaha, just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteYeah, my roomie is going to switch solely to streaming video. Definitely not a great move.
There is on a lot about this on other blogs and the feeling is Netflix will suffer losses in membership, is there an alternative or are they doing this because there is no one better?
ReplyDeleteNetflix is going to lose in the long run. When it happens I hope there is another company out there that will pick everyone up.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, a free puppy or a hand job? Ummmm you could teach the puppy to.....no forget that.
I use the streaming feature much more...but I get pissed bc so many of the movies I want to watch arent available on the streaming feature. So, like you, I may just say FUCK YOU to Netflix, since I'm saying it so frequently now anyway...Why should Netflix get to dodge the Fuck You Bullet?!
ReplyDeleteThis has really pissed me off. I ranted about it forever on Facebook And Google + last night, though, so I don't have much left to say.
ReplyDeleteRaising your price for the same service, just because the market and demand allow you to get away with it, does not make it good business.
This is funny, because I just dropped my TV programming all together and was thinking of getting streaming Netflix. Nope, no more!
ReplyDeleteYeah, take that Netflix!!! I dropped them awhile ago. I have enough cable channels to keep me busy throughout summer and beyond.
ReplyDeleteWow...you Netflixers are PISSED.
ReplyDeleteI don't have it myself, so I have no dog in this hunt, but it's fun watching.
We got that email, too. I'm sorry, you want to DOUBLE our cost for . . . no reason? It's not suddenly costing you more to deliver the dvds, right?
ReplyDeleteWe do Hulu and are debating Hulu Plus. Maybe switching to Blockbuster. Or just sticking with streaming.
We already stopped using Netflix once years ago because they were throttling our dvds [we had unlimited and were getting a dvd a week, maybe, and not getting those in a timely manner]. I guess it will happen again.
I use my ex-husband's wife's account to log in and watch movies, shows etc so I don't really care :)
ReplyDeleteWith any luck she'll stick with it!
With most companies, the bottom line is always about money.
ReplyDeleteOf course! I'm finally get on the Netflix bandwagon 2 months ago and am getting bent over already... and not in the way I like! Go figure!
ReplyDeleteYea, Netflix, great idea, this will certainly make people happy...
ReplyDeleteI kinda like how this is getting such negative feedback. Most customers are looking at a ~60% price hike for the same services. I'm out after this month for sure.
Yeah, I was pretty pissed. Am, sorry, AM pissed. There are shows that I love that are streaming, and shows that I love that aren't and I like being able to have both for the original fucking price. Seriously? My $18 plan goes to like $25. FUCK THEM. And the horse they rode in on.
ReplyDeleteDamn you netflix!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, mine went from $11 to $18, so I'm dumping them and probably giving Hulu Plus a try. TV is what I'm looking for anyway. I can do Redbox and my premium channels for movies.
ReplyDeleteI find it pretty surprising that they can afford something when they're humble and starting up, but when they've got over 24 million people backing them up they suddenly need more. I really doubt that they do, even if it seems logical.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I was never with them :)
Wait till facebook and amazon enter into movie streaming market, netflix would slash the price.
ReplyDeleteBlockbuster's bankruptcy is reason I guess.
For me? with my kid streaming and watching Huckle cartoon, I wouldnt be surprised if Netflix files for bankruptcy.
Netflix streaming was probably the one friend I had in my darkest, and most bored of times. Seriously, the one beacon of light and hope I had in this tundra of stupidity and depression. So, least to say, I was devastated when my mom received the email. I wanted to cry, I wanted to screech, I wanted to kick... scream... anything to forget the pain that gnawed in my heart. It seems i've been saying my farewells lately... to my friends, to school, to my boyfriend, and now to netflix.
ReplyDeleteThis suffering never ends
i hate the price increase but i'm to stubborn to change so i'll pay and ranting about it every month
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you wrote this post, because I got this same email and thought WTF. Then I realized when I went to my Netflix account that I have only rented like 3 movies in the last two months but my cousin and brother are constantly streaming so I guess it's worth it. I'm definitely considering canceling or moving down a plan too. :) I'm actually surprised Netflix didn't raise their rates sooner.
ReplyDeleteDale :)
I'd be pissed if it was me paying...I pay for the Internet and they pay for the Netflix. I was considering MegaVideo because all my Anime streams come from there. We don't get TV we stream it all and at first it was ok because we found streams that were not costing...but the Internet is a changing. I try to post with the word Fuck(and other foul words) as much as I can before I will be censored. I love doing it on Facegook. All my republican and right with God FB friend cringe.
