Bob the Builder, I am not.

Can I build it?

Well, we will see...

Yes, that's me.
No.  Really.  That's me.
Stop laughing... I swear...
Wait, I already posted pics of myself?
....crap.

As I mentioned before, my girlfriend is now on the verge of becoming a professional scrapbooker.  She just landed her first major client, and the magic of the first check is still in the air.

Website?  Check.

Now, what's next?

Well, she has her own room for her hobby business, but the desk is a little small.  And storage is minimal.  Even when clean, it looks like a crafty explosion of scissors and punches and crap junk things.

So now, we are working on making a desk for her, with adequate storage, drawers, etc.

Let me define 'we.'  She is designing it, and doing all the measurements.  And then I gets to build the sucka.

Now, I have minimal woodworking experience.  I didn't take woodshop in school (*cough* band-nerd *cough*) and the only thing I really built with my dad were some pinewood derby cars in scouts.

So, needless to say, this is going to be an adventure for me.  And for some crazy reason, I'm looking forward to it.

For those of you who want to see what a 'proper' scrapbooking desk/room looks like, check these out:

...I KNOW.

Shelves, storage, and hidden compartments.
It's like a James Bond gadget... but crafty.

What's funny is we are living in her Grandmother's house right now.  We have talked in the past about buying this house at some point.  We could get a good deal and the mortgage would be reasonable, but we want to do a lot with it if we actually take out a home loan and finance this place.

For example, we want to knock out some walls.  Expand the kitchen, 2nd bedroom, den, etc.  Also, this place has WALL TO WALL carpet.  Yes, even in the bathroom and kitchen.  We can't do anything about it now, but we would re-floor most of this place.

In short, if I am successful with this desk endeavor, I'm going to have my work cut-out for me in the future.

Cut-out... get it?  HAHAHAHA....

Any advice from the peanut-gallery?  I could use some help...

  2. The pic of the shirtless guy is just ew, blech seriously!

If you have the proper tools and are patient you can build anything. I am the antithesis of handy and I can pretty much do anything with the proper tools and the internet. I had to learn when my hubby was in Afghanistan, so you can do it for sure!!

  3. Just read up and make sure you have the measurements perfect. I always hate it when I'm off by a quarter inch and it's suddenly not EXACTLY the way I wanted it.

  5. I feel like the peanut gallery needs actual footage of you shirtless with a tool belt before we can adequately comment on the work ahead of you.

  6. I'm not much of a carpenter. I did built a work bench for the garage, and it's okay, but not great.

And yes, I did get the joke - terrible. Just, terrible.

  8. Milk crates and planks, my friend! The only building materials you need, and they even have that sharp avant garde look to them that just screams brilliance.

I also think that trying to buy that house would be a great idea. From what I've read, that area of the country is expecting a pretty big growth boom here soon. It would be a good idea to lock down that sweet mortgage rate while the getting is good!

  11. Well, there was a scrapbooking store up the street by my house. I live in an area where people have nothing but money to blow, and it still went out of business. Hope your wife's business doesn't meet the same fate.

  12. My advice would be do such a bad on the furniture that you are banned from all future D.I.Y projects. I spilt red paint over a brand new carpet and was banned from painting for two years, I tried to get a number of other failed D.I.Y projects taken into account but Mrs B refused to extend the ban….

  13. Wow, kudos to your lady for taking off on doing what she loves! They still won't pay me for drawing stupid comics or writing books, so I'm a work in progress and very envious.

  14. Two words: Craig's List. Or: Garage Sale. You can WASTE a shit ton of money on just buying the supplies for the contraption you want to make - but if you get the "bulk" piece from a garage sale, estate sale or craigs list - you can always "tweak" it the way you want. I always say, "Know your limits." If you think you can do it - go for it. If you're like me, then you'll go so far - and admit that you need something "quasi already built" to "build upon." GOOD LUCK!!

  16. I live next door to an Ikea, so I just buy there and assemble. That's the extent of it for me. Good luck! She will be thrilled to efficient and capable of knowing where her stuff is because what she does involves a lot of little pieces and bits.

  17. Switch to hardwood in areas where you are expanding; will be easier to maintain, will look nicer, and will be easy to expand more in the future.

  20. Damn... Wish I could help but I've never been good with wood. I mean... I can "sport wood" while I'm checkin' out porn when the wife's in bed. But, like you, I haven't had a whole heap of experience with wood craftsmanship. I hope you're able to get the house, dude. Good luck.
